Spiritual Direction

Spiritual Direction is offered for those individuals who want to deepen and understand more thoroughly their relationship with God.  Faith, the interior life, and spiritual challenges are just a few of the topics that can be discussed in these sessions.  Spiritual Direction may be done one-on-one, as a couple, or with the entire family.  Sessions might be one-time or continuous as part of one’s spiritual journey.

A priest or another suitable person assists individuals in understanding themselves with the help of divine grace to grow in the practice of Christian virtues.  On the one hand, a person is guided towards holiness, which is essentially subjective or objective.  Subjective holiness means that a person possesses divine grace and lives morally by the practice of virtues.  An objective holiness denotes their consecration to the service of God:  priests by their ordination, religious by their vows; sacred places, vessels and vestments by the blessing they receive – all for the sacred purpose for which they serve.

On the other hand, in present times many faithful, with a lack of understanding and out of ignorance, embrace the moral values of the world, or non-Christian spiritual practices.  Thus, they experience unhealthy behavioral patterns, various forms of addiction, or involvement in the occult, and as a result they slowly approach spiritual death.  Just as a physical body may not only be ill or injured, but it may also cease to retain its principle of life.  The soul can loose sanctifying grace through mortal sin and supernaturally cease to live.  It is therefore a spiritual death because it is no longer united with God, who is the giver of supernatural life.  In the past, spiritual direction dealt with growth in holiness.  Today, many people who are lost seek help through spiritual direction to avoid spiritual death.
